On 4th May, Downe House hosted another excellently organised and competitive summer competition. St Mary’s attended with our U13, U15 and U18 Teams to compete against eight other schools.

The 4 x 25m U13 Medley Relay was the first event of the gala. Florence B got the team off to a fine start on the Backstroke leg, touching first at the takeover. Rachel (Breaststroke), Clementine (Butterfly) and Florence P (Freestyle) increased the lead further to secure the win. They missed out on the event record, held by Cheltenham Ladies' College (since 2005), by two tenths of a second. The quartet continued their winning streak in the 4 x 25m Freestyle Relay, finishing in 59.09, again narrowly missing out on the event record. By winning both relays, they secured the age group win.

The U15 Team all raced extremely well in both of their relays. It was a particularly strong field, with times from the top three schools comparable with the senior age group. The 4 x 50m Medley Relay order was Sophia (Backstroke), Allison (Breaststroke), Hilary (Butterfly) and Molly (Freestyle). All four produced good times in this event and also in the Freestyle Relay with a handful of Personal Best times between them.

Not to be outdone, the U18s gave it their all. In the 4 x 50m Medley Relay, in an almost identical fashion to the U13s, Harriet put the team into a slight lead on the Backstroke leg with Eva-Rose (Breaststroke), Ashley (Butterfly) and Sophie (Freestyle) increasing the lead further to secure the win. The quartet went on to win the Freestyle Relay with a three-second advantage over the closest team. Eva-Rose had a sensational last leg, dipping under 30 seconds for the first time. By winning both relays they also secured the age group win.

The overall results put us into second place to Downe House who pipped us by just one point!

Downe House - 47, St Mary’s - 46, Cheltenham LC - 39, Marlborough - 25, St Swithun's - 23, Wycombe Abbey - 21, Heathfield - 19, Godolphin - 10, Tudor Hall - 7

It was also another busy weekend at the South-West Regionals for Florence P and Florence B who produced excellent swims and both gained Personal Best times.
