The Fourth Form girls recently enjoyed a visit from the Army’s Youth Outreach, STEM and Diversity teams, as part of Donaldson Week.

The LIV and MIV (Years 7 and 8) initially heard two presentations from the diversity team; the first on women in the army and the second on transgender lived experience and LGBTQ+ in today’s Army.

For the LIV, this was then followed by an interactive introduction to Cyber defence. The scenario was that an unknown enemy is attempting to hack the British Army Headquarters' servers. The girls had to work in teams to break the codes and use all available intelligence to identify the malicious hacker group responsible. They played the role of Intelligence Analysts, working to defend the Army HQ against a live cyber-attack. They learnt about the work of the Army Intelligence Corps, but also the wider national risks associated with cyber-attacks, their nature and frequency, and the most common types of perpetrator. The girls had to deploy their mathematical, reasoning and problem-solving skills to find the passwords to open a series of intelligence files and ultimately identify the guilty group.

The MIV were led by the outreach team in an endeavour to use robotics and block python programming to transport aid in a mock natural disaster scenario. They had to both build and program the devices, under time pressure, along a predetermined route.

It was an enriching experience for all involved and our thanks go to the Army's Youth Outreach, STEM and Diversity teams for visiting us.
