On Monday 14th March, as part of British Science Week, the Chemistry Department put on a ‘Slime Workshop’ for interested UIV (Year 9) pupils. There were a few different types of slime that the students got the chance to make:
‘Oobleck slime’ – which is a non-Newtonian fluid made by mixing cornstarch and water.
‘Simple slime’ and ‘Super slime’ - both involved mixing a solution of sodium tetraborate (Borax) with either glue or PVA (polyvinyl alcohol).
The concept behind this is beyond the scope of iGCSE Science, as it involves the formation of Hydrogen-bonds between the molecules, but the students all had great fun. Their only complaint was that they were not allowed to take the slime back to St Cecilia’s House with them!
