This week, the girls learnt about German Easter traditions. One popular German Easter tradition is to decorate trees and bushes (known as the “Ostereierbaum”) with colourful, hand painted Easter eggs. An impressive example of this tradition is the Saalfelder Ostereierbaum (Saalfeld Easter egg tree) in Saalfeld. Family Kraft used to decorate and hang over 10,000 eggs on a tree outside their house each Easter holiday which, over time, attracted lots of attention and became a local tradition. To this day, the whole town carries on this tradition as a lovely annual communal event. St Mary’s MIV (Year 8) and UIV (Year 9) girls followed in the footsteps of this tradition and decorated their own eggs during one of their German lessons this week.
As in many other countires, German children also enjoy an Easter egg hunt ("Ostereiersuche“). Girls in the LV (Year 10) used their German vocabulary of directions to hide eggs and write out a treasure hunt for another team to find the eggs. The chocolate treasure was enjoyed by all.
“Frohe Ostern” wünschen Frau Falconer und Frau Davies.
