On Tuesday 14th of March, UV (Year 11) students attended Maths Inspiration, an interactive maths lecture at the Bristol Hippodrome, which also coincided with Pi Day!
At the Maths Inspiration lecture we had the pleasure of listening to four inspiring maths speakers who talked about different areas of maths in funny and engaging ways.
It was truly fascinating to see the maths topics that we’ve been studying for the past year applied to real-world situations, such as learning about probability by taking a deep dive into the classic Monty Hall problem, learning about percentages by discussing how statistics can be manipulated in news articles for shock factor, and, finally, learning about hidden patterns behind different juggling tricks.
Since it was, by a fun coincidence, Pi Day, we tried to calculate pi as an audience. This was done by picking random numbers between 0 and 1, which could then be interpreted on a graph as a point on the diameter of a circle. Although our final result of 2.89 may not have been most accurate, I still loved being involved in the process. Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience!

Great React-ion to Pi Day!
The Maths Inspiration trip also coincided with 'Pi Day'. In celebration of the day, a post on Teams was shared by Mr Douglas encouraging students to get involved with celebrating the day. After an announcement in Chapel, the post attracted a lot of attention and (we believe) became by far the most ‘liked’ post on Teams that the school has ever seen! At the end of the day, the final count was 119 reactions, including 116 likes, two hearts and even one pie emoji! It was lovely to see such great community spirit celebrating the day.
