In the Spring Term Donaldson Week, MIV spent a fantastic day learning some basic skateboard skills. While half the year group skated, the other half had a lecture on the history and evolution of skateboard graphics as an art form. We learnt about how this art forms an intrinsic part of skate culture and looked at some prominent artists who have made a successful career from this niche medium.

The girls were then set the challenge of designing their own skateboard deck graphics over the Half Term break, simply for fun and on an entirely optional basis. To our delight, many excellent pieces of art were submitted and it was very difficult to choose the winners. Ultimately, it was decided that Florence and Tabitha had submitted the boldest and most imaginative designs and were announced as our worthy winners.

The standard of their work was so high that I decided their designs deserved to be transformed into works of art onto a real skateboard deck. These were kindly presented to the girls in Chapel early this week and will be mounted in pride of place in St Prisca’s House in the Summer Term.

Well done to all those that participated!
