On Friday 24th November, the UVI Geographers attended the national Sixth Form Hazards Conference in Westminster, London.
In a packed Emmanuel Centre, and led by experts in their field, the students learned about Tsunamigenic earthquakes, the Alpine-Himalayan collision zone, compared the impacts of the Autumn 2023 Afghanistan and Nepalese earthquakes, considered which natural hazard is the deadliest (1 in 15 chance of death if you are affected by a Tsunamis, versus a 1 in 240 chance for an earthquake), and explored the new, innovative ways in which governments, NGOs and other organisations are forecasting and mitigating natural hazards to prevent them becoming disasters.
It was an invaluable experience that supported the students in their A Level Geography learning.
