‘Oh du fröhliche Weihnachtszeit’ – Germans are very big on the anticipation of Christmas and traditions in the run-up to the big day include baking biscuits and decorating gingerbread houses.

The German Department were keen to share these traditions and in the spirit of Christmas, decorated gingerbread houses with the MIV Germanists. Girls had to be creative with their designs using German spiced biscuits and lots of decorations. There were varying degrees of success, especially whether the roof stayed on (or not!) and some opted for more sweets than others to hold walls in place.

The UIV baked and decorated ‘Butterplätzchen’ (butter biscuits), with some varied and interesting designs, including a blue ‘Christmas rabbit’ (not a traditional German Christmas character, we might add). All the girls had lots of fun and enjoyed eating their creations.

We wish everyone a very merry Christmas. Frohe Weihnachten!
