As the current Student Head of Maths, Mimi and I presented a Chapel on 'Pi Day' - March 14th, or 3/14 - to show how pi is involved in subjects that are not so obviously linked to pi - such as poetry, history, biology, and media arts.
To begin, we played a song composed using the digits of pi to draw everyone’s attention into this idea, followed by a clip from Star Trek with a funny math joke - the computer shouts “No! No! No!” when it was asked to calculate the last digit of pi - something that is theoretically impossible to do.
Then, we announced our pi-based activities planned to take place over the week. Firstly on Wednesday, we collaborated with the Art Club where people drew Pi skylines or made bracelets with beads that have different numbers on it. Both of which were arranged in the order in pi, which brings awareness to the number itself.
On Thursday, we held a competition to find 'who could memorise the most digits of pi', and gave out actual 'pies' to all pupils who attempted the challenge. After numerous volunteers and attempts, we had Tabitha (UIV) who wrote out 129 digits of pi, as our final winner. Congratulations to Tabitha!
It was an interesting experience, and we hope to encourage more people to study maths through experiencing the fun of it in our activities.
