On Wednesday 13th March, the Sixth Form Psychology students went to Warwick University for a 'Psychology in Action' programme, where we listened to five separate lectures given by professors, each exploring a different area of psychology.
The day started with a talk on memory and how it is rebuilt according to people’s expectations. We then went on to listen to a lecture on body image and how the cultures around us affect it, followed by a lecture on forensic psychology, and how psychopath's brains work. This was given by the former chair of forensic psychology in the UK, so was such a rare and extraordinary opportunity.
After lunch, we listened to a lecture on 'misophonia', a reaction people may have to sounds like chewing, and how this reaction can be conditioned into them.
To conclude the day, we had a talk on the 'placebo effect' within the sports world, as we learnt how sports psychologists use a placebo to improve their athlete’s self-confidence and, therefore, performance.
Overall, this was such a great day and an incredible opportunity for all of us, as we were being taught ideas that extended beyond our usual curriculum and covered such wide areas. A big thank you goes out to Mrs Chappell, Mrs Waldron and Miss Thorpe for making this amazing trip happen!
