Over the past week, the Senior Drama Club have taken part in workshops covering special makeup effects and costumes with industry professionals, which will come in useful for our upcoming performance of Sweeney Todd. Here Millie B (LVI) reports on the experience:
On Thursday 6th June, we took part in a two and a half hour special effects makeup workshop from industry professional Kate Griffiths. First of all, we were given an introduction to SFX makeup, the types of makeup used, and how they are designed to be both life-like and practical for working with actors. One interesting tip that we learnt was to make realistic looking wounds with Weetabix, sugar syrup, and food dye!
We were then given a tutorial on how to make a life-like injuries, including bullet wounds, scratches, and bruises, using fake skin and fake blood. Overall, it was a very fun experience, and we were able to learn a lot about the technical aspects of the industry.
On Monday 10th June, we enjoyed a costume design workshop with Louisa Reeve, an industry specialist. We explored our ideas for designing costumes for Sweeney Todd, specifically for the character of Mrs Lovett. Louisa provided a wealth of insight and technical knowledge, helping us with sketches and selecting possible fabrics.
