Last weekend saw 96 participants take to the courts to battle it out at this year’s PGSM Tennis Tournament. With the event split into three categories to cater for levels of competitiveness, we started across all 20 courts for four hours of fun and feisty matches!

In the Mr Wright Social Tennis Competition, six pairs played in a round-robin format to decide the eventual places. Phoebe C (LV) and Nick just pipped Lily F (LV) and Charlie to the honours in this year’s competition to win the Wright Cup.

Moving onto the astro, 24 pairs played a round-robin format in the Rusty Racquets Competition to decide placings for various tiers and semi-finals with the competition getting ever more competitive. Ada R (UV) and Henry deservedly made the final, however, it was Esme H (LV) and Rupert that turned play to their favour, and came out as winners of the 2024 Gray Cup.

While all these matches were taking place, the competitive nature of other players came out early in the Riley Cup over on the hard courts. Even in the warm-ups prior to the tournament starting, there were pairings scouting the opposition to gain an edge over their competitors!

After a hard-fought round-robin, it was time for our tier 1 qualifiers to take to the semi-finals. Flora S-O  (UVI) and Michael were joined by Lara W (LVI) and Ed as both came through their semifinals in formidable fashion. As the people gathered to watch the finals taking place, the atmosphere intensified and soon the cheers erupted for Lara and Ed who came through 6-1 to earn their names on the Riley Cup.

Thank you to everyone who played and supported the event. It was lovely to see so many returning faces to welcome new competitors too. We are looking forward to running the event for you again next year.

A massive thank you to Mrs Virginia Kairis and the PGSM for holding the event and to Mrs Dawn Riley, Mr Mike Wright and Miss Sophie Davies who ran the court schedules to perfection.

Mr Jonathan Hayes, Director of Tennis
