The 4th Calne (St Mary’s Calne) Guides and Rangers have packed plenty of festive activities into the final two weeks of term.
Fire Lighting Practice
At the end of November, the girls got a taste of traditional Guiding, complete with marshmallows and chocolate digestive biscuits, through a fire-lighting activity. After discussing safety rules and learning the best techniques for structuring and lighting a fire, the Guides and Rangers eagerly took on the challenge. Despite the chilly weather, they all successfully lit their fires and roasted marshmallows with great excitement.
Girlguiding Calne District Carol Service
Once again, the unit joined the wider Calne District for the Girlguiding Calne Carol Service at St Mary the Virgin Church. The event also included the Calne District Scout units, Derry Hill Girlguiding Units, and town dignitaries. This joyful celebration had the theme of The 12 Days of Christmas and the Guides enthusiastically participated by performing their assigned verse of 'Nine Ladies Dancing', waving their cards in the air. Lucy (LIV) and Heidi (LV) were particularly proud to carry the unit standards to the front as part of the service.
Christmas Crafts and Badge Presentations
In the final meeting of the term, the girls were presented with the first badge they had earned - Communicate Stage 5. To achieve this badge, they completed various activities that encouraged them to explore tone, communication processes, and media bias. To finish the session on a festive note, the girls enjoyed making sequin-covered baubles as part of a Christmas craft activity.
Next term, we look forward to the Country trip to Longleat for those who have signed up, celebrating Chinese New Year (with food!) and working towards our next badge. The girls have chosen between Live Smart (focused on DIY skills) and Make Change Stage 5.
