On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome back Mr Kevin Wells, Chair of the local Calne Food Bank, who graciously agreed to be interviewed in Chapel by UVI pupils Edith Fitzwilliam-Lay and Claire Dodd with all St Mary's pupils present. We were also joined by three Year 6 Council Leaders from St Margaret’s - Molly, Alice, Phoebe, and Izzy - who each took a turn at the microphone to ask insightful questions.
The students asked thoughtful questions that underscored the importance of supporting this vital local charity, which provides much-needed assistance to the community by sourcing and distributing food and toiletries to those facing financial hardship.
We learned that while demand for the Food Bank has slowed slightly after recent years of heightened need, this may change as we approach winter. When asked about how individuals with disabilities or those lacking transportation can access support, Mr. Wells explained that food deliveries are arranged for those who are unable to visit the Food Bank in person. He also highlighted how their new premises, located in the heart of Calne and just steps away from our school, have significantly improved their operations.
To support Calne Food Bank, both St. Mary’s and St. Margaret’s hosted a Home Clothes Day this week, and all donations from each school’s Harvest Festival Service will be given to the Food Bank.
Donations have decreased by 50% this year, and while all contributions are greatly appreciated, the Food Bank currently has a surplus of baked beans and pasta. The following items would be especially helpful:
- Tinned vegetables
- Tinned tomatoes
- Instant noodles
- Small pasta sauces
Please ensure all items are in date.
