This term we have continued to have adventures on land and on water.

On Sunday 8 June, the girls were excited to join up with 1st Calne Guides once more - this time  to do canoeing at Coate Water Country park with the Girlguiding Boating instructors for our county. They thoroughly enjoyed not only the standard canoeing activity but also stepping from boat to boat, creating a flotilla of canoes and doing the action song ‘Heads, shoulder knees and toes’ whilst standing in their boats. The girls also participated in the promise ceremony of two girls from 1st Calne Guides who renewed their promises whilst standing in the canoe. It was lovely to see how the girls got stuck in to both the activity and also mingling with the other unit, building up the friendships that they made on Guide Camp over Half Term.

Our final meeting of term on Wednesday 25 June we took part in a Penny Hike - racing to be the first group to reach the ice cream in town. Splitting into two groups, the girls had to toss a coin every time they reached a junction and either go heads (left) or tails (right). Whilst not the most direct route to take, it was a great chance for the girls (and adults accompanying them) to see parts of the local area that they otherwise would not explore.

Next term we look forward to welcoming new Guides and Rangers - both from new girls and from existing members of St Mary’s Calne as well as the current UIV Guides moving up to Rangers in September.

I want to thank all those who have helped, both occasionally and regularly, to give up their time freely as volunteers. Without their enthusiasm for Guides and willingness to support our girls we could not run these activities. Many people have helped out, but a particular thanks need to go to the regular Unit Helpers who I rely on for running this unit: Mrs Bolton, Mrs Long, Mrs Brown, Mrs Harrison and Mrs Baldwin.
